What is an M.2 capture card?

An M.2 capture card installs into an M.2 slot — the same type used by NVMe SSDs in modern computers. M.2 slots are found in compact PCs, embedded computers, industrial systems and laptops where a full-length PCIe slot simply doesn't exist.

The Magewell Eco Capture range uses the standard M.2 2280 form factor (22mm × 80mm) and the PCIe interface within the M.2 slot — delivering the same FPGA-based professional capture performance as Magewell's full-size Pro Capture PCIe cards, in a fraction of the space.

Important: Your system must have an M.2 slot using a PCIe interface (M-key or B+M key). M.2 SATA slots are not compatible. Contact us if you are unsure of your system's slot type.

These serve very different purposes. The Quad SDI M.2 (£539) captures four simultaneous HD/3G-SDI sources at up to 1080p60 — ideal for multi-camera systems requiring high channel count. The 12G SDI 4K Plus M.2 (£570) captures a single source at 4K60 via 12G-SDI — for applications requiring 4K broadcast-grade capture in an embedded system. Choose Quad SDI for channel count, 12G SDI 4K Plus for 4K resolution.

What operating systems do Eco Capture M.2 cards support?

Magewell Eco Capture M.2 cards support Windows (10, 11 and Server editions) and Linux. Driver installation is required — unlike USB Capture cards which are driverless UVC. Drivers are available from Magewell or available on nuuo.co.uk. macOS is not supported on the Eco Capture range.

What software works with Magewell Eco Capture M.2 cards?

Eco Capture M.2 cards are compatible with any DirectShow or V4L2-based software on Windows and Linux respectively. This includes OBS Studio, vMix, Wirecast, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Vizrt, ChyronHego, EVS and most professional broadcast and production software. The Magewell Capture Express tool is also available free for basic capture and monitoring.

How do Eco Capture M.2 cards compare to USB capture cards?

USB capture cards (HDMI Gen 2, SDI Gen 2 etc.) are portable, driverless and work with laptops — ideal for conferencing, streaming and field use. Eco Capture M.2 cards are internal, require driver installation and are suited to embedded and server deployments where size matters but portability is not needed. Both deliver professional broadcast-quality capture using Magewell's FPGA-based processing.
