Encoders vs Decoders — Understanding the Direction
The most important concept in video converters. Always identify which direction you need before selecting a product.
🔴 Encoder — physical signal → network
Pro Convert HDMI / SDI → NDI / SRT
Takes a physical HDMI or SDI signal from a camera, medical device, console or presentation source and converts it into Full NDI and SRT streams on the Gigabit Ethernet network. The camera becomes a network source visible to any NDI-capable software or device.
Camera → [HDMI/SDI cable] → Encoder → [Ethernet] → vMix / OBS / Director
Models: HDMI Plus · HDMI 4K Plus · SDI Plus · SDI 4K Plus · 12G SDI 4K Plus · HDMI TX
🔵 Decoder — network → physical output
Pro Convert NDI / SRT / IP → HDMI / SDI / USB
Takes a network signal (Full NDI, SRT or IP stream) and converts it back into a physical output for connection to a monitor, TV, broadcast SDI router, PC webcam port or recording device. Used to route network cameras to physical displays or broadcast infrastructure.
vMix / NDI source → [Ethernet] → Decoder → [HDMI/SDI] → Monitor / TX / PC
Models: NDI to HDMI 4K · NDI to AIO · NDI to SDI · IP to USB · IP to HDMI · IP to AIO 4K

How encoders and decoders work in a complete facility — and the typical setups each product enables.
Fig 1. Complete Pro Convert facility. Cameras (left) connect to encoders via short HDMI/SDI cables. Encoders output Full NDI over one PoE Cat 6 cable to the Gigabit switch. Production software (vMix, OBS, Director) receives all cameras as NDI sources. Decoders receive NDI from the network and output HDMI, SDI or USB to displays, broadcast infrastructure and conferencing PCs.
Fig 2. Three Pro Convert use cases. Left: SDI broadcast camera bridged to NDI with SDI loop-through for monitor — feeds streaming software and YouTube simultaneously. Centre: HDMI PTZ camera → Pro Convert HDMI Plus encoder → network → IP to USB decoder → appears as USB webcam in Zoom/Teams. Right: Production programme NDI feed → multiple decoders → sanctuary screens, PC webcam and 4K IMAG display simultaneously.

Pro Convert Encoders — physical signal → Full NDI + SRT network
† All Pro Convert devices are PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) powered — except Pro Convert IP to USB which is USB bus powered. · All encoders output Full NDI simultaneously with SRT. Full NDI: ~100–250 Mbps/source on Gigabit. · RTMP output available on all encoders for simultaneous streaming to YouTube/Facebook alongside NDI production. · "Loop-through" on encoders passes the physical input signal to a second output connector while simultaneously encoding to the network.
Signal & Protocol Guide — What Each Standard Means
Key standards and protocols used across the Pro Convert range — and which direction each applies.
Full NDI (output)
Encoders output Full NDI — lossless, approximately 100–250 Mbps per source over Gigabit Ethernet. Auto-discovered on the local network by vMix, OBS (NDI plugin), Wirecast, Magewell Director and NDI Tools. One frame latency at 60fps.
Encoder output · Lossless
Full NDI (input)
Decoders receive Full NDI from the network — from any NDI source: Pro Convert encoders, BirdDog cameras, vMix output, OBS Virtual Camera NDI, Magewell Director output, NDI Tools Virtual Input.
Decoder input · Any NDI source
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport)
Encoders output SRT simultaneously with NDI — for internet streaming to YouTube, Facebook or custom SRT ingest servers. Decoders receive SRT from internet-based sources or remote SRT encoders. AES-128/256 encryption included.
Both directions · Encrypted
RTMP
Encoders output RTMP simultaneously with NDI and SRT — for YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch and custom RTMP servers. Decoders do not output RTMP. Configure RTMP destinations in the encoder's web interface.

PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at)
Power over Ethernet — the Gigabit network cable also delivers up to 25.5W of power. All Pro Convert devices (except IP to USB) are PoE+ powered. One Cat 6 cable provides both network connectivity and power — no separate power adapter or outlet at the camera or display position.
Power · Clean installation
💡 Loop-through on encoders: All Pro Convert encoders (except HDMI TX) include a physical loop-through output that passes the incoming HDMI or SDI signal to a second connector simultaneously with encoding. This means the camera can drive its local monitor AND the encoder simultaneously — no HDMI splitter required. For example: endoscopy camera HDMI → Pro Convert HDMI Plus → HDMI loop-through to surgical monitor + Full NDI to the recording PC over Ethernet.
⚠️ NDI network requirements: Full NDI uses approximately 100–250 Mbps per source. A standard Gigabit switch provides 1,000 Mbps per port — sufficient for 4–8 Full NDI sources per port. For more than approximately 7 simultaneous sources, enable IGMP snooping on your managed switch to prevent NDI multicast traffic from flooding all ports. Full NDI does not cross VLANs by default — configure mDNS proxy or use NDI Access Manager to specify IP addresses manually for cross-VLAN operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Pro Convert encoder and decoder?
An encoder takes a physical HDMI or SDI signal and converts it INTO a network signal (Full NDI + SRT). A decoder takes a network signal (NDI or SRT) FROM the network and converts it back to a physical output (HDMI, SDI or USB). Encoders go INTO the network; decoders come OUT of it. Always identify which direction you need before choosing a product.
What is Full NDI and how much bandwidth does it use?
Full NDI is the original NDI protocol — approximately 100–250 Mbps per source at 1080p60, approximately 500 Mbps–1 Gbps at 4K60. It provides very low latency (one frame at 60fps) and no quality loss. All Pro Convert encoders output Full NDI. A standard Gigabit switch (1,000 Mbps per port) supports 4–8 Full NDI sources per switch port before requiring link aggregation.
Are Pro Convert devices PoE powered?
Yes — all Pro Convert devices are PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) powered except Pro Convert IP to USB (USB bus powered). One Cat 6 cable from a PoE switch provides both network connectivity and power. No separate power adapter or mains outlet required at the camera or display position.
Can I use Pro Convert to make an NDI PTZ camera appear in Zoom?
Yes. Use the Pro Convert IP to USB (£369). It receives the NDI stream and outputs it as a standard USB UVC webcam. In Zoom or Teams, select it from the camera dropdown. No driver installation required. Works with any NDI source: BirdDog cameras, other Pro Convert HDMI Plus encoders, vMix NDI output and NDI Tools Virtual Input.
What is the difference between NDI to AIO and NDI to HDMI 4K?
NDI to AIO outputs three signals simultaneously: HDMI, 3G-SDI and analogue composite — all at 1080p from one NDI source. It is the most flexible decoder. NDI to HDMI 4K outputs only HDMI but supports 4K60 — ideal for 4K IMAG screens and 4K displays where no SDI or analogue output is needed. Choose AIO for maximum compatibility; choose 4K for 4K display output.
Does Pro Convert work on any Gigabit network?
Pro Convert devices work on standard Gigabit networks and are auto-discovered using mDNS. For multi-VLAN networks, mDNS may not cross VLANs — configure mDNS proxy on your managed switch or use NDI Access Manager to specify IP addresses manually. For more than approximately 7 simultaneous Full NDI sources, enable IGMP snooping on the network switch.
Can Pro Convert encoders stream to YouTube and output NDI at the same time?
Yes. All Pro Convert encoders output Full NDI and SRT/RTMP simultaneously without any additional configuration. The camera feeds vMix or OBS on the local network via NDI AND streams to YouTube via SRT/RTMP at the same time — from one encoder, no PC required for the streaming function.
