What is the Elgato Game Capture Neo?
The Game Capture Neo is Elgato's entry-level capture device, designed for creators who are beginning their streaming or recording journey. It captures at 1080p60 — the standard streaming resolution for most platforms — while passing through the full 4K HDR signal from consoles and gaming PCs to the display without any degradation.
It is the simplest Elgato capture device to set up and use. As a UVC compliant device, it requires no driver installation on Windows, Mac or popular Linux distributions — plug it in, select it as a video source in OBS Studio or any other capture software, and start streaming.
4K passthrough, 1080p capture
The Neo captures at 1080p60 for streaming — which is the maximum resolution accepted by most streaming platforms without premium access. Meanwhile, the 4K HDR passthrough ensures the gaming display receives the console's full 4K HDR signal. This means you get a great stream at 1080p60 while still playing on a 4K HDR screen at full quality.
Who it is for
The Neo is aimed at first-time streamers and creators who want a simple, affordable capture solution for YouTube or Twitch content creation. It does not require technical knowledge to set up and works out of the box with every major current gaming platform.

The Neo is the starting point for gaming content creation — straightforward to set up and immediately compatible with all current platforms.
First-Time Streaming
The simplest path from console or gaming PC to a live stream on YouTube or Twitch. Connect the console to the Neo, the Neo to your laptop, open OBS, and go live.
Gaming Recording
Record 1080p60 gameplay footage from PS5, Xbox or Switch for YouTube uploads, clip compilations and gaming commentary content without technical setup complexity.
Student and Educational Use
For students and educators creating gaming tutorial content, walkthroughs or educational videos involving game footage — the Neo provides broadcast-quality 1080p60 at the most accessible price point.
Laptop Streaming
Bus-powered via USB-C, the Neo adds zero weight or complexity to a laptop streaming setup. No power adapter, no PCIe slot — just the device and a USB-C cable.
Twitch and TikTok Content
Create live gaming content on Twitch or TikTok LIVE at 1080p60 — the native resolution for both platforms — without the cost or complexity of a higher-spec capture device.
Multi-Console Creator
Use the Neo to switch between capturing different consoles — PS5 on one setup, Switch on another — without needing separate capture devices for each, since it works with all current HDMI game sources.
Why does the Neo only capture at 1080p60 when my console outputs 4K?
The Neo is designed as an affordable streaming device — 1080p60 is the streaming resolution used by the vast majority of creators and is the maximum accepted by most platforms without premium tiers. Your display still receives the full 4K signal via passthrough. Upgrading to the 4K S or 4K X gives 4K capture if needed.
Does it require a driver?
No. The Neo is UVC (USB Video Class) compliant and is recognised immediately as a standard webcam/capture device by Windows, macOS and most Linux distributions without any software installation.
Can I use it with a Nintendo Switch?
Yes. Connect the Switch dock HDMI output to the Neo input. The Neo captures the Switch output at up to 1080p60 (the Switch's maximum output resolution) and passes it through to your television simultaneously.
Elgato capture devices are compatible with all major streaming and recording software via USB Video Class (UVC) — they appear as a standard webcam/capture source in any compatible application.
