What is SMPTE ST-2110?

SMPTE ST-2110 is the broadcast industry standard for transporting professional video, audio and data over IP networks. It replaces traditional SDI infrastructure with standard 10G or 100G ethernet cabling — enabling video signals to be routed, switched and distributed across a network in the same way as data.

Unlike NDI (which compresses video), SMPTE 2110 carries uncompressed 10-bit video for broadcast-grade quality. It is used by major broadcasters, live production facilities and studios transitioning from traditional SDI infrastructure to modern IP-based broadcast.

Both are IP video standards, but they serve different purposes. SMPTE ST-2110 carries uncompressed 10-bit broadcast video over managed 10G or 100G ethernet networks — it is the professional broadcast standard used by major broadcasters and is more complex to set up. NDI (from NewTek/Vizrt) compresses video and works over standard gigabit ethernet, making it simpler to deploy in smaller studios and AV environments. For major broadcast infrastructure, SMPTE 2110 is the standard; for studio and AV environments, NDI is more practical.

This means a single ethernet cable provides both the 2110 IP video signal and power to the converter — ideal for camera-mounted and remote applications.

Bidirectional means the converter handles video in both directions simultaneously — camera video goes from the SDI camera into the 2110 IP network, while the program return video comes back from the network to the SDI output on the same converter. This means camera operators see the programme feed in their viewfinder, and the converter also carries tally (recording/on-air indicators) and talkback audio back to the camera in the same ethernet connection.

The SFP variants (IP to HDMI SFP and BiDirect 12G SFP) are for installations where the distance between the converter and the switch or other equipment exceeds 100 metres — the limit for copper ethernet. The SFP socket accepts 10G ethernet optical modules (multimode or singlemode fibre) for runs of hundreds of metres or several kilometres. They are also useful where electromagnetic interference makes copper cable impractical, such as near RF transmitters or power equipment.
