PCIe Capture — Inside the Workstation

The Magewell Pro Capture HDMI is a PCIe capture card — it installs inside a desktop PC or server via the PCIe x1 slot and becomes a permanent part of that system's hardware. This internal architecture delivers several advantages over external USB capture devices that make it the preferred choice for dedicated production workstations and broadcast ingest servers.

PCIe provides a direct, high-bandwidth connection to the host CPU and memory. Video data from the HDMI input is transferred directly to system memory via DMA (Direct Memory Access), bypassing the USB controller overhead entirely. The result is lower capture latency, more consistent frame timing and less CPU overhead than equivalent USB capture — all of which matter in professional production environments.

For a workstation dedicated to video ingest, editing or broadcast monitoring, the Pro Capture HDMI is the appropriate capture solution. It is always present, always connected and operates independently of USB port availability or USB controller load from other devices.

Linux Server Compatibility

The Pro Capture HDMI is driverless on Linux via the V4L2 (Video for Linux 2) framework — it is recognised by the kernel without any Magewell driver installation. This makes it the natural choice for Linux-based broadcast servers, automated ingest systems and custom media processing pipelines where driver maintenance is undesirable.

In automated server environments running FFmpeg, GStreamer or custom capture pipelines on Linux, the Pro Capture HDMI can be addressed directly as a V4L2 device without any vendor software dependency. This is a significant operational advantage over capture devices that require proprietary kernel modules.

For two simultaneous HDMI channels in a single PCIe card, see the Pro Capture Dual HDMI (£350). For 4K HDMI capture via PCIe, see the Pro Capture HDMI 4K (£432). For USB-based single-channel HDMI capture, see the USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 (£231).

The Pro Capture HDMI serves dedicated production workstations and broadcast ingest servers where PCIe-integrated capture is preferred over external USB devices.

🖥️

Dedicated Ingest Workstations

Post-production facilities and broadcast operations running dedicated ingest workstations benefit from PCIe-integrated capture — the Pro Capture HDMI is part of the machine's hardware, not a peripheral, with the reliability and consistency that implies for long-duration ingest sessions.

🐧

Linux Broadcast Servers

Linux-based broadcast servers running FFmpeg, GStreamer or custom ingest pipelines can use the Pro Capture HDMI as a driverless V4L2 device. No proprietary kernel modules, no driver updates to manage — direct kernel integration for stable automated operation.

🎬

NLE Editing with Capture Panel

Adobe Premiere Pro users with the Magewell plugin can capture directly from the HDMI input into the editing timeline. DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer also support direct ingest from Pro Capture PCIe cards for professional editorial workflows.

📊

Broadcast Monitoring & QC

Quality control workstations receiving HDMI programme feeds for compliance monitoring, loudness measurement and video analysis can use the Pro Capture HDMI for consistent, low-latency signal delivery to monitoring software applications.

🎓

University Production Suites

Higher education media production facilities building dedicated multi-seat editing and ingest suites can specify the Pro Capture HDMI in each workstation for consistent, hardware-integrated capture capability across the facility.

🏢

Corporate AV Production Servers

Enterprise organisations running in-house AV production operations with dedicated server infrastructure can integrate Pro Capture HDMI cards for reliable scheduled and on-demand ingest from HDMI camera and presentation sources.

📡

Contribution Encoding Servers

Broadcast facilities building contribution encoding servers for HDMI source ingest can use the Pro Capture HDMI inside server-grade hardware for reliable, 24/7 ingest operation with minimal maintenance overhead.

⚙️

Custom Broadcast Software Development

Broadcast software developers building ingest management platforms, media asset management systems and custom monitoring applications can use the Magewell SDK for direct Pro Capture HDMI integration on Windows and Linux.

🔬

Research & Scientific Workstations

Research facilities with dedicated scientific workstations requiring permanent HDMI capture from instruments, microscopes and imaging systems can integrate the Pro Capture HDMI inside the workstation for continuous, stable capture.

What is the advantage of PCIe capture over USB capture?

PCIe capture cards connect directly to the motherboard PCIe bus, transferring video data to system memory via DMA with lower latency and more consistent frame timing than USB. USB capture devices share USB controller bandwidth with other devices and introduce additional software layers. For dedicated production workstations and broadcast servers, PCIe is the more appropriate architecture.

Does it work driverless on Linux?

Yes. The Pro Capture HDMI is recognised on Linux via the V4L2 (Video for Linux 2) kernel framework without any proprietary Magewell driver installation. This makes it suitable for automated Linux-based ingest servers and capture pipelines where driver maintenance is undesirable.

Which PCIe slot does it fit in?

The Pro Capture HDMI uses a PCIe x1 interface. It is physically compatible with PCIe x1, x4, x8 and x16 slots — it will work in any standard PCIe slot in your PC or server. The card is full-height; for systems requiring a low-profile card, see the Pro Capture Mini HDMI (£189).

What is the difference between Pro Capture HDMI and USB Capture HDMI Gen 2?

The USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 (£231) is an external device connecting via USB — portable, driverless via UVC, suitable for laptops and any computer with USB. The Pro Capture HDMI (£215) is a PCIe card that installs inside a desktop or server — lower latency, permanently integrated, better suited for dedicated production workstations and Linux servers. The Pro Capture is also less expensive.
