Six Analogue Channels, One PCIe Slot

The Magewell Pro Capture Hexa CVBS is the most distinctive card in the Pro Capture range — six simultaneous analogue composite (CVBS) capture channels from a single PCIe slot. No other Magewell card covers six channels of analogue video, making the Hexa CVBS the purpose-built solution for workflows that specifically require multi-channel analogue composite capture.

CVBS (Composite Video Baseband Signal) is the signal format output by analogue cameras, VHS and Betacam tape decks, legacy CCTV systems, older broadcast equipment and a vast range of standard-definition video sources still in active use or held in archive libraries. Six simultaneous channels from one PCIe card means six of these sources can be digitised, monitored or processed simultaneously on a single workstation.

At approximately £72 per channel, the Hexa CVBS offers the most cost-effective route to multi-channel professional analogue capture available in the Magewell range.

The Analogue Legacy in 2025 and Beyond

Analogue video may seem like a historical format, but it remains in active professional use across a surprisingly wide range of environments. CCTV and security systems installed across the 1990s and 2000s output CVBS. Industrial cameras in manufacturing and process monitoring environments use analogue composite. Sports analysis systems in academies and clubs still run analogue cameras. Archive libraries hold decades of content on analogue tape that has never been digitised.

The Pro Capture Hexa CVBS addresses all of these scenarios with six simultaneous capture channels — enabling a single workstation to digitise six analogue sources in parallel, reducing the time required for large-scale archive projects by a factor of six compared to single-channel digitisation.

For single-channel analogue alongside HDMI and SDI, see the USB Capture AIO (£375) or Pro Capture AIO 4K Plus (£637). The Hexa CVBS is specifically for high-channel-count pure analogue workflows.

The Pro Capture Hexa CVBS is purpose-built for multi-channel analogue composite workflows — CCTV digitisation, analogue archive projects and legacy camera system integration where six simultaneous SD channels are required.

📹

CCTV System Digitisation & Migration

Organisations migrating from legacy analogue CCTV to IP security systems can digitise recordings from six analogue cameras simultaneously during the transition period. Archive footage from analogue CCTV stored on tape or DVR can be digitised at six times the speed of single-channel capture.

📼

Large-Scale Analogue Archive Projects

Broadcast archives, media libraries, universities and national institutions digitising collections of VHS, Betacam, U-matic and other SD tape formats can run six digitisation decks simultaneously from one workstation — dramatically reducing the time and cost of large-scale archive conversion projects.

Sports Academy Legacy Camera Analysis

Football academies, athletic associations and sports clubs that have years of training and match footage on analogue recordings can digitise six tapes simultaneously for migration into modern video analysis platforms and coaching software.

🏭

Industrial Process Camera Digitisation

Manufacturing facilities with legacy analogue process monitoring cameras installed across production lines can capture and archive footage from six cameras simultaneously for quality review, incident documentation and compliance record digitisation.

🏛️

Museum & Cultural Heritage Archive

Museums, cultural institutions and national archives digitising video collections for preservation, public access and digital heritage programmes can use the six-channel Hexa CVBS to maximise throughput in time-limited digitisation projects.

📡

Legacy Broadcast Equipment Integration

Broadcast facilities with legacy analogue equipment still in operational use — routing switcher outputs, tape playback systems, legacy camera feeds — can integrate up to six analogue sources simultaneously into digital ingest workflows on a single workstation.

🔒

Security & Forensic Evidence Digitisation

Law enforcement agencies, legal firms and security consultancies digitising analogue CCTV evidence for investigative and legal proceedings can process six camera recordings simultaneously on a single secure workstation.

🎓

Media Studies & Film School Archive

Film schools and media studies departments with analogue student production archives can digitise collections for digital access and preservation — six tapes at once from one editing workstation significantly reduces the resource commitment for large collection digitisation.

⚙️

Automated Six-Channel Analogue Pipelines

Developers building automated analogue digitisation systems, archive management platforms and legacy media migration tools can use the Magewell SDK for frame-synchronised six-channel access to all Hexa CVBS inputs simultaneously on Windows and Linux.

Does CVBS carry audio?

No. CVBS (composite video) is a video-only signal — it does not carry embedded audio. If you need to capture audio alongside the six video channels, a separate audio capture interface (USB audio, PCIe audio card or audio interface) is required. Each analogue source would typically have separate audio outputs (RCA, XLR or 3.5mm) that connect to the audio capture device.

What is the maximum resolution per channel?

CVBS is a standard-definition analogue format. Each channel captures at 720×480 pixels for NTSC sources (North American and Japanese SD) or 720×576 pixels for PAL sources (UK and European SD). This reflects the native resolution of the analogue composite signal — there is no upscaling or enhancement of the SD source.

Can each of the six channels capture a different source simultaneously?

Yes. All six BNC inputs are completely independent — each captures its own source independently and simultaneously. Six different analogue sources (six different CCTV cameras, six different tape decks, or any combination) can be captured at the same time, each appearing as a separate capture device to the operating system.

Is it suitable for VHS and Betacam tape digitisation?

Yes. VHS, Betacam, U-matic, S-VHS and other analogue tape formats all output CVBS via BNC or RCA composite connectors. Connect up to six playback decks to the Hexa CVBS and capture all six simultaneously. For large tape collections, running six decks in parallel dramatically reduces project duration compared to single-channel digitisation.
