4K Capture Inside the Workstation

The Magewell Pro Capture HDMI 4K is a PCIe capture card that brings 4K HDMI capture permanently inside a production workstation or server. Where the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus provides 4K capture externally via USB, the Pro Capture HDMI 4K is part of the workstation's hardware — always present, always available, with no external device to connect or manage.

The PCIe DMA architecture delivers 4K video data directly to system memory with lower latency and more consistent frame timing than USB-based 4K capture. In a dedicated 4K ingest workstation processing large volumes of high-resolution footage over extended sessions, this consistency matters for both reliability and system resource efficiency.

The Adobe Premiere Pro plugin from Magewell enables direct capture from the Pro Capture HDMI 4K into the Premiere timeline — no intermediate recording, no import step. The 4K signal from the camera becomes immediately available as timeline footage in the editing application.

Genlock — Broadcast Timing at 4K

The genlock input synchronises the Pro Capture HDMI 4K to an external reference signal. In a multi-camera 4K facility or a broadcast environment where the capture card must operate in phase with other equipment, genlock is a fundamental requirement — not a premium feature.

Without genlock, a capture card runs on its own internal clock, which may drift relative to other equipment in the facility. This causes frame timing inconsistencies that are imperceptible in isolation but create problems in multi-camera editing, broadcast distribution and downstream processing. Genlock eliminates these issues by locking the capture timing to the facility reference.

For single-channel 4K HDMI capture without genlock at lower cost, see the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus (£385). For multi-format 4K capture with AIO inputs, see the Pro Capture AIO 4K Plus (£637). For dual-channel 4K, see the Pro Capture Dual HDMI 4K Plus LT (£1,207).

The Pro Capture HDMI 4K is designed for dedicated 4K production workstations and broadcast servers requiring permanently integrated 4K HDMI capture with genlock synchronisation.

🎬

4K Post-Production Ingest Workstations

Dedicated 4K ingest workstations for Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid can capture directly from 4K HDMI cameras and recorders into the editing timeline via the Magewell Premiere plugin — no intermediate file step, direct 4K ingest at full quality.

📡

4K Broadcast Facility Integration

Broadcast facilities integrating 4K HDMI sources into existing infrastructure benefit from genlock — the Pro Capture HDMI 4K locks to the facility reference signal, ensuring frame timing consistency with other broadcast equipment in the signal chain.

🏥

4K Medical Imaging Workstations

Dedicated medical imaging workstations permanently connected to 4K HDMI surgical cameras, endoscopes and imaging equipment can capture at full 4K resolution via the integrated PCIe card for clinical documentation, specialist review and training content.

🔬

4K Scientific Research Workstations

Research workstations permanently connected to 4K microscopes, high-resolution spectrometers and precision imaging instruments capture 4K data directly into analysis software via the PCIe card — eliminating the external USB device from a precision scientific environment.

🎓

4K University Media Production Suites

Higher education media production facilities building dedicated 4K workstations for student film, television journalism and documentary programmes can integrate the Pro Capture HDMI 4K for consistent, hardware-integrated 4K acquisition.

🏢

Enterprise 4K Production Servers

⚙️

4K Linux Ingest Server Development

Broadcast software developers and infrastructure engineers building 4K ingest servers on Linux can use the Pro Capture HDMI 4K as a driverless V4L2 device for 4K capture in automated pipelines without vendor driver maintenance.

What is the difference between this and the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus?

The USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus (£385) is an external device connecting via USB — portable, suitable for laptops and any computer with USB 3.0. The Pro Capture HDMI 4K (£432) is a PCIe card permanently installed inside a desktop or server — lower latency, hardware integrated, with genlock that the USB version lacks. Choose USB for portability; PCIe for dedicated workstations.

Does the genlock work with standard broadcast house sync?

Yes. The genlock input accepts standard broadcast reference signals including house sync (black burst for SD/HD), tri-level sync (for HD and 4K facilities) and standard NTSC/PAL black burst. This covers the reference signal formats used in the vast majority of broadcast facilities.

Does it work with the Adobe Premiere Pro capture panel?

Yes. Magewell provides a free plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro that enables direct capture from the Pro Capture HDMI 4K into the editing timeline. Install the Magewell plugin, select the Pro Capture HDMI 4K as the capture device in Premiere's capture panel, and capture 4K directly without any intermediate software or recording step.

Is it driverless on Linux?

Yes. The Pro Capture HDMI 4K is recognised on Linux as a V4L2 device without any Magewell driver installation. This makes it suitable for Linux-based 4K ingest servers and automated capture pipelines where proprietary driver maintenance is undesirable in a production server environment.
