True 4K Capture via USB

4K resolution has become the standard for professional image acquisition. Mirrorless cameras, cinema cameras, PTZ cameras, 4K medical endoscopes and broadcast cameras all output 4K HDMI — and the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus captures this at full resolution via a single USB cable.

Unlike 4K-labelled consumer capture cards that downscale or compromise on frame rate, the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus captures the full 4K signal at up to 60fps, maintaining the quality that 4K cameras were chosen to deliver. This matters for content that is graded, archived or broadcast at full 4K quality.

Genlock — Professional Timing

The genlock input is the feature that separates the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus from consumer 4K capture solutions. Genlock synchronises the capture device to an external video reference signal (house sync or tri-level sync), ensuring the captured frame timing matches other cameras and systems in the production.

Without genlock, individual capture devices may drift slightly out of phase with each other, causing timing inconsistencies in multi-camera productions and audio sync issues in broadcast environments. Genlock eliminates these issues entirely.

For 4K SDI capture, see the USB Capture SDI 4K Plus. For dual USB output 4K capture, see the USB Capture HDMI 4K Pro.

🎬

4K Content Production

Capture full-resolution 4K from mirrorless cameras, cinema cameras and PTZ cameras into Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro for 4K post-production workflows without quality compromise.

🏥

Medical 4K Endoscopy & Imaging

4K endoscopes, surgical cameras and 4K medical imaging equipment deliver unprecedented detail. The USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus captures this at full resolution for surgical record, remote specialist consultation and high-resolution medical documentation.

📡

Broadcast Multi-Camera Production

Genlock synchronisation makes this the right choice for broadcast-standard multi-camera productions where frame timing must be consistent across all feeds. Used in studio productions, sports coverage and live events.

🎓

4K Lecture Capture & Remote Teaching

Universities upgrading to 4K lecture theatre cameras can capture at full 4K resolution for Panopto, Kaltura and Echo360, providing students with the detail needed for complex diagram, specimen and practical demonstration content.

📸

Photography & Product Review

Commercial photographers and product reviewers using 4K mirrorless cameras as their capture source can record 4K video directly to their editing computer for product showcase, review content and e-commerce video.

Sports 4K Production

Sports productions using 4K cameras for slow-motion analysis, highlight clips and broadcast-quality coverage can capture full-resolution 4K with genlock synchronisation for professional output quality.

🏢

4K Corporate Broadcast & Town Halls

Enterprise-level corporate communications teams investing in 4K production quality for major shareholder events, investor days and global town halls require genlock-capable 4K capture for production-standard output.

🎭

⚙️

4K System Integration & Development

Systems integrators and developers building 4K ingest pipelines, 4K streaming infrastructure and 4K content management systems can use the Magewell SDK for programmatic 4K capture access.

Does it capture 4K at 60fps?

Yes. The USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus captures up to 3840×2160 at 60fps (4K UHD 60p) from HDMI 2.0 sources via USB 3.0. Ensure your source is set to output 4K60 and your USB port is USB 3.0 or higher.

What is the genlock used for?

Genlock synchronises the capture device to an external timing reference signal (house sync, tri-level sync or black burst). This ensures the capture frame timing matches other cameras and equipment in a multi-camera production, eliminating frame phasing issues and audio sync problems that occur when devices run on independent internal clocks.

What is the difference between the 4K Plus and the 4K Pro?

The USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus (£385) provides a single USB output for capture at 4K60. The USB Capture HDMI 4K Pro (£415) adds a second USB output, allowing two computers to capture simultaneously from the same source — for example, one capturing for live streaming and another recording an independent archive simultaneously.

Does it support HDR content from HDR cameras?

The device can capture from HDR sources. HDR metadata is preserved in the capture stream for applications that support HDR. For standard SDR capture workflows, HDR content is captured without the HDR metadata applied to the captured image.
