Capture and Monitor Simultaneously

The Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus adds two critical capabilities to the standard USB capture workflow — a live HDMI loop-through output and a discrete audio input. These two additions transform it from a simple capture device into a professional monitoring and capture solution.

The HDMI loop-through output passes the incoming HDMI signal directly to a display, projector or downstream equipment while simultaneously sending the video to your computer via USB. The source display is never interrupted — the presenter's slides remain on the projector, the camera output remains on the confidence monitor, the patient display continues functioning during the medical procedure. Capture happens invisibly alongside normal operation.

This is the principal reason the USB Capture HDMI Plus is specified over the standard Gen 2 in any environment where a display must remain active during capture.

Discrete Audio for Professional Sources

The 3.5mm audio input allows an external audio source — a microphone, mixer, soundcard output or audio interface — to be embedded into the captured stream independently of the HDMI audio. This is valuable when the HDMI source audio is insufficient (a camera with a built-in mic) or when you need a separate high-quality audio feed embedded into the capture.

In conference room applications, this means the room's boundary microphone audio can be captured alongside the camera feed. In broadcast workflows, the line-level output of a mixing desk can be embedded. In education, a lavalier microphone on the presenter provides cleaner audio than the HDMI source alone.

For SDI signals with loop-through, see the USB Capture SDI Plus. For 4K HDMI capture, see the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus and HDMI 4K Pro.

The HDMI loop-through and discrete audio input of the USB Capture HDMI Plus open applications that require continuous display operation alongside professional-quality capture.

🏢

Corporate Presentation Rooms

Capture presentation laptop HDMI while keeping the room projector live. The presenter sees their slides on the projector normally; the signal is simultaneously recorded and streamed without any interruption or signal splitting.

Houses of Worship — Live Monitoring

Show the main service IMAG output on sanctuary screens while capturing for live streaming to remote congregants. The display and stream run simultaneously without requiring external signal splitters or additional equipment.

🏥

Operating Theatre Display Continuity

Surgical camera displays in operating theatres must not be interrupted. The loop-through output maintains the surgeon's display while the signal is independently captured for medical records, training observation and telemedicine consultation.

🎓

Hybrid Lecture Rooms

Display lecture content on the classroom screen while capturing for Panopto, Kaltura or Echo360 lecture archive simultaneously. The loop-through avoids any disruption to in-room students while ensuring full online quality.

🎤

Conference & Panel Events

Capture the main display or confidence monitor feed with separate boundary microphone audio embedded via the discrete 3.5mm input — providing a complete conference capture solution in a single compact device.

🎭

Live Events — Operator Monitoring

Event producers and vision mixers can capture SDI or HDMI feeds while keeping monitoring displays active. The loop-through eliminates the need for signal splitters in compact production setups.

📰

News Desk & Studio Production

Capture camera or replay feeds to a streaming PC while maintaining the feed to the studio monitor. Essential in studio environments where camera operators and directors must retain live visual feedback throughout a broadcast.

🔬

Scientific & Research Recording

Research instruments with HDMI outputs can be captured for lab notebooks and data documentation while the instrument display remains fully functional for the researcher — no workflow interruption.

🔌

AV Integration — Simultaneous Outputs

Integrators specifying capture in rooms where the display must remain primary can use the loop-through to extend the signal without signal loss or additional splitter hardware. Discrete audio input adds system flexibility for room audio capture.

Does the loop-through output affect the display or signal quality in any way?

No. The HDMI loop-through is a bitstream pass-through — it outputs an exact copy of the incoming HDMI signal to the connected display with no processing, no latency and no signal degradation. The display behaves exactly as if the source were connected directly to it.

Can I use both the HDMI audio and the discrete 3.5mm audio input simultaneously?

The device presents a single audio capture interface to the host. In most configurations you select either the HDMI embedded audio or the discrete 3.5mm audio as your audio source in your software. Some software allows mixing, but the primary use case is to use the discrete input as a replacement for the HDMI audio when a better audio source is available.

What is the difference between the HDMI Plus and the HDMI Gen 2?

The USB Capture HDMI Gen 2 (£231) provides HDMI to USB capture only — no loop-through, no external audio input. The USB Capture HDMI Plus (£287) adds both an HDMI loop-through output (so the source display remains live) and a discrete 3.5mm audio input. Choose the Plus whenever you need to maintain a live display connection or embed external audio.

Will it work if I connect a 4K HDMI source?

The USB Capture HDMI Plus supports HDMI 1.4b and captures up to 1080p60. A 4K source connected to the input will typically be downscaled to 1080p for capture. The loop-through will pass the 4K signal to the display at the source resolution. For native 4K capture, see the USB Capture HDMI 4K Plus (£385).
